Education and Training

Dr. Silverman spent three years as an undergraduate at the University College of Arts & Science of New York University, after which he obtained a medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine.

Following an internship in Medicine and Surgery at Montefiore Hospital in New York, he underwent 3 years of psychiatry residency and a year of child & adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the University of Rochester/Strong Memorial Hospital.

For the next two years he served in the U.S. Army as a psychiatrist at the 97th Army General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany.  During his second year, he was Assistant Chief of the Psychiatry Department.  He also was given top secret clearance and was assigned to be the psychiatrist for the U.S. Army Security Agency in Frankfurt.

After his military service, Dr. Silverman underwent a second year of child & adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the Jewish Board of Guardians, dividing his time between the Madeline Borg Child Guidance Institute and Montefiore Hospital.

Over the next ten years he was a Senior Research Psychiatrist at the Child Development Center in NYC, working under Peter Neubauer.  While there, he participated in a long term study of personality development and headed a unique project that identified the reasons why disadvantaged preschool children in Day Care Centers were unable to utilize educational assistance.  His team devised a highly successful methodology that helped children overcome the blocks to their learning and enabled them to become good students when they went on to elementary school.  He also taught child development to mental health trainees at JBG.

During those ten years, Dr. Silverman underwent five years of adult analytic training and then five years of child & adolescent analytic training at the Psychoanalytic Institute at Downstate Medical Center (which subsequently re-affiliated with NYU College of Medicine).  After his graduation, he was invited to join the faculty as a teacher and supervisor in the child and the adult training programs, which has continued to do ever since.

When he relocated to Maplewood, NJ, in 1971, he was invited to join the faculty of the Contemporary Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies as a teacher and as a Training & Supervising Analyst.  CCAPS eventually merged with the Institute for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy of New Jersey to form the Center for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy of NJ (CPPNJ), where he currently teaches and is a Training & Supervising Analyst.
